Student Spotlight: Cantrell Strauther

13-year-old Cantrell Strauther (seen above in Video & Filmmakers Club) is in the 8th grade at Lincoln School. His favorite subject is science because of the labs and projects. His most recent experiment involved making gas burn. (Be careful!) Cantrell’s least favorite subject is math, but he cites his mentor, Jeremy Brown, for helping him get better. They meet together on Thursday nights and have done so since March 2010.

What do Cantrell and Jeremy have in common? Sports! The first thing they talk about each week is what’s happening in the world of sports. Cantrell is (was?) a big LeBron James fan, which spurred a lot of speculative debate in June. His prediction for the upcoming season is that the Miami Heat will have the best record, but that the Boston Celtics might win it all. Only time will tell.

In his spare time, Cantrell does love to play basketball, which is says is “fun” and “addicting,” but he also likes to jerk. Jerking is a form of dancing with lots of kicking and movement. He learns new moves from videos on YouTube and even records his own with a camera.

In the future, Cantrell would like to attend Alcott High School and Michigan State University. He dreams of being an NBA star, so MSU may be a good choice since it is the alma mater of NBA legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson. And though math is his most challenging subject, he says he would like to study it in college. Way to tackle things head on!

Eventually, Cantrell dreams of moving to Florida. His choice stems from a fun time he had in Orlando, not just because of the weather! In fact, his favorite thing about Chicago is the weather, all seasons included. Take that, critics!

Cantrell, we wish you the best as you continue through school. Thank you for being a part of the Cabrini Connections family!
